- 22 januari 2026
Leaving Big Tech might not always seem easy at first. Where do you begin, and what are actually good alternatives? To help you on your way, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide with alternatives. Here you can find all the steps.
Big Tech Social Media is more and more falling into disrepute: Facebook, Instagram and Threads (Meta,) X, Tiktok (Byte-dance), LinkedIn (Microsoft) and YouTube (Google). Everyday you hear about the negative effects of social media platforms: *fake news*, spreading hate, manipulated elections, addiction and polarization. Users are losing control. A change has to be made!
But Social Media is maybe the hardest category to replace. You are very dependend on what your netwerk is doing. And every platform has his own personality. Luckely, there are more and more comparable alternatives available, without tracking or addicting alorithms.
Often, real 'social' social media is decentralized. This means that the platform exists outof thousands of servers who work together, every single server with its own administrator. Because it can be hard to change social media platfroms, we are going to be giving some extra tips in this step. We start with the best option: Start using a privacy friendly social media platfrom. But if this is not a (good) option, we want to give you tips to change the settings in your Big Tech platforms so they are protecting your privacy as much as possible. Lastly, you can take some steps to make sure *doomscrolling* is as unattractive as possible.
