Bye Bye Big Tech step 1: email & agenda

Leaving Big Tech might not always seem easy at first. Where do you begin, and what are actually good alternatives? To help you on your way, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide with alternatives. Here you can find all the steps.

It might seem daunting, but switching email providers is actually a relative easy step. Whether you’re using Gmail (Google), Hotmail or Outlook (Microsoft), iCloud Mail (Apple), or Yahoo Mail (Yahoo) - all of these belong to American Big Tech cooperation. The good news is that switching to a privacy-friendly alternative is relatively simple. Friends, colleagues, and acquaintances will still be able to easily find and reach you. You don’t need to convince your entire family to switch at the same time, like with a messaging app like Signal.

As you can see in the chart below, many European providers offer email accounts for just a few euros per month. Compared to Big Tech, you won’t lose much: these providers include calendar functionality, storage, and in most cases, the option to import your old emails.

Note: here we are explicitly talking about mail providers, not mail programs. A mail provider (what you recognize by the name after the “@” sign) is separate from the program you use to read your email (such as Thunderbird or Outlook).

How to switch

As far as we’re concerned, all the providers we listed are worthy alternatives to Big Tech email services. In making your choice, you might consider factors like cost, interface (which one appeals to you most?), and any additional features provided.

  • 1
    Registrer

Choose one of the recommended providers and create an account.

  • 2
    Transfer your data

Import your contacts and shared calendars.

  • 3
    Devices

Add your new email and calendar to your phone(s) and other devices.

  • 4
    Update accounts and network

Update your email address with all your accounts and everyone in your network

This step can take some time. Go through all your online accounts and update your email address. That way, you won’t miss important messages from services or risk two-factor verification emails being sent to the wrong address. Don’t forget to update your address with government services, insurance companies, and your bank.

Also, let your personal network know that you can now be reached at your new address.
And/or forward emails from your old account to your new one. This is useful while switching, until all your contacts use your new address. Here’s how to do that with
    Gmail and Outlook.

    Phase out

Keep your old email account active for a few more months.

All important mail and calendar invites should be coming through your new account now, but holding onto the old one for a while allows you to catch any overlooked services, newsletters, or contacts still using it.

After that, you can delete the old account entirely.

"Many internet providers also offer email addresses. Keep in mind, however, that you’ll lose access to it if you ever switch internet providers.”
