Bye Bye Big Tech Step 3: A privacy friendly cloud

Leaving Big Tech might not always seem easy at first. Where do you begin, and what are actually good alternatives? To help you on your way, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide with alternatives. Here you can find all the steps.

Are your family photo's stored on Apple Cloud, Goggle Drive or Microsoft's OneDrive? You are not the only one. A lot of us are very dependent on American Big Tech Companies for cloud storage. If your file management and storage is done via an American server, you are at risk. In the future you might not be able to use these services without American consent, or without it being read or looked at.

We will admit that changing to a privacy friendly cloud is not the easiest of the steps: most often the transferring of data from one cloud to another has to be done by hand and this takes time. Also, Big Tech connects their cloud storage to their operating systems, which sometimes means it is impossible to disconnect - unless you transfer to another operating system. If that change is just a bit to much, you can of course still choose to not use the cloud that is provided by the Big Tech operating system. You can still save your pictures and files in a privacy friendly cloud.

Like you can see in the chart below, there are European cloud providers. You don't loose much in terms of usability: most of these services have options to easily open and transfer files, to create a photo album, to recover files and have possibilities to share documents, just like Google and Microsoft.

How to switch

We think that all the providers in our list are decent alternatives for Big Tech. Which to choose depends on what you are willing to pay, which interface you like best and/or which functionalities are important to you.

  • 1
    Choosing

Register with your choosen provider via the website

  • 2
    Downloading

Download the app on all your devices on which you want to use it

  • 3
    Migrating

Migrate your files from your old storage provider

This can be quite a bit of work, but luckely there are things that can help. First, two general pieces of advice:

    1. Download in batches: Very big downloads (bigger than 5GB) can take long and have the chance to fail somewhere in this process. It works better to do multiple, smaller, download batches.

    2. Dubbel check if your downloads are saved in a readable format. For example, Google Docs files are unreadable in Proton Drive, so export these to .odt first.

    Koofr

Koofr makes it very easy to migrate: you connect your Koofr cloud to your Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox and you select which files you want to transfer. Read their blog about how to do this.

The Good Cloud and Proton Drive

As far as we know, The Good Cloud and Proton Drive do not have such tools to help you transfer your files. Are you switching from Google or Microsoft? Then it is possible to download all your files at ones. With Dropbox this is not possible.

    Google Takeout

Google Takeot is a way to export all of the files on your Google drive and to download them as a zip. You can then unpack the zip and move it to your choosen cloud.  Read here how you can use Google Takeout.

    Microsoft OneDrive Backup
Microsoft OneDrive has a Download all files option in the back-up menu: click on the icon on the right side of your toolbar and go to Settings > Sync and Backup > Manage Backup > Advanced settings > Download all files.

    Dropbox

Dropbox does not offer a way to download all your files at once. The best thing to do is to download your files per folder. Select a folder and choose 'Download' in the menu. Pay attention though: Dropbox does not support download of more than 20GB or 10 000 files.

    Installing

Change the settings of your devices so they don't automatically save photo's and files to your Google Drive, Apple Cloud or Microsoft Onedrive

"Proton Drive can be used to safely share files, but if you would like to do this outside the cloud, you can also use SendThis company complies with Dutch privacy laws and has good encryption."
