Bye Bye Big Tech step 2: browser and search engine

Leaving Big Tech might not always seem easy at first. Where do you begin, and what are actually good alternatives? To help you on your way, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide with alternatives. Here you can find all the steps.

This second step is about your browser. Whether you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge, your browser processes a lot of information about your preferences, location, and online behavior. That makes your browser a gateway to a wealth of information about you. Unfortunately, plenty of Big Tech companies use that data to give third parties insight into who you are. Google (Chrome), for example, builds a profile of your search behavior and sells it to advertisers so you’ll see personalized ads across the internet.

Closely tied to your choice of browser is your choice of search engine. Whoever controls what people see when they search has a lot of power, especially when 90% of internet users are using the same search engine.

The alternatives in the chart below all protect your privacy and shield you from tracking. Switching browsers won’t cost you anything compared to Big Tech’s options. With search engines, it’s a little different: because the results aren’t personalized, the quality may sometimes be slightly less precise.

Here you can read the selection criteria and conditions for the recommendations below.

How to switch

As far as we’re concerned, the providers listed are all solid alternatives to Big Tech services.

  • 1
    Install

Download the browser of your choice and install it on your computer, phone or tablet

  • 2
    Setup

Set your browser as the default

  • 3
    Configuration

Adjust the settings so your browser uses your privacy-friendly search engine of choice.

    Firefox

Open “Menu” (top right), go to “Settings,” then click “Search.” There you can select your preferred privacy-friendly search engine as the default.

    Brave

Open “Menu” (top right), go to “Settings,” then “Search Engine.” There you can set your preferred privacy-friendly search engine as the default.

  • 4
    Configuration

Adjust your browser settings so you’re browsing as securely as possible.

    Firefox

Open Firefox and check which privacy settings the browser offers. Click on “Menu” in the top right corner, then on “Settings.” Below we briefly highlight the most relevant options:

    • Search suggestions: uncheck this so that you don’t send data with every keystroke, but only when you press ‘enter.’
    • Enhanced Tracking Protection: choose “Strict” for the best protection against social media trackers, cross-site cookies in all windows, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers, and known or suspected fingerprinters.
    • Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed: enable this to avoid leaving cookies on your device. You can add exceptions for sites you trust.
    • Firefox data collection and use: uncheck these to prevent sending data to Mozilla:
      • Send technical and interaction data
      • Send daily “ping”
      • Send automatic crash reports
    • Website advertising preferences: uncheck “Allow websites to perform privacy-preserving ad measurement.”
    • HTTPS-Only Mode: select “Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows.”

    Brave

Open Brave and check which privacy settings the browser offers. Click on “Menu” in the top right corner, then on “Settings.” Below we briefly highlight the most relevant options:

    • Shields: adjust settings here for ads and the information websites pass on to third parties.
    • Trackers and ads blocked: choose whether you want no blocking, standard blocking, or “aggressive” blocking. We recommend “aggressive.”
    • Upgrade connections to HTTPS: switch this on so the browser always makes a secure connection when possible.
    • Cookies blocked: choose whether to block none, all, or only “cross-site” cookies. We recommend either “block cross-site cookies” or “block all cookies.” Be aware that some websites need cookies to function properly.
    • Fingerprinting protection: this prevents websites from recognizing you based on your browser’s unique “fingerprint.” You can choose standard, strict, or disabled. We recommend “standard,” as “strict” can sometimes cause problems.

"If you’ve chosen a privacy-friendly search engine, you’ll see non-personalized ads. You can also install an ad blocker like uBlock Origin to block ads altogether."
