"Imagine a distant future where the world is run by tech bros like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Businessmen like Donald Trump determine the political narrative, and in the Netherlands, former chief of Dutch secret services Dick Schoof is in charge. A dystopian prospect? Sadly... Welcome to 2025.

We doomscroll through our days. Our data is collected, analysed and traded by Big Tech in digital ad auctions to the highest bidder. Censorship is no longer a distant concept, but an everyday algorithm that determines what we can and cannot see. While multinationals grow rich on our attention and fears, we citizens are left bereft. So what do you do?

I remain hopeful. Because hope is power. And it is precisely that prospect of change and improvement that makes me rise to action. Because an unjust system is not a law of nature: it is man-made, and so we can also tear it down and build something new. A fair, open and just society.

As a campaigner and designer in politics and for civil society organisations, my work was rooted in making injustice visible, and mobilising people towards change. Not through abstract rhetoric, but through stories of real people. Because stories are the engine of resistance. They make injustice tangible, and perspective imaginable. They give voice to what has been made invisible, and give power back to those from whom it has been taken.

At Bits of Freedom, I continue that work. Here, I develop content, strategy and engagement to involve an ever-growing group of people in the fight for digital rights and freedoms. Every day I learn something new, from our communication and from my colleagues. And then I often think: luckily Bits of Freedom exists."
