Meta's aanbevelingsalgoritmen bepalen welke content jij te zien krijgt op je tijdlijn. Behalve als je bewust schakelt naar een andere tijdlijn. Maar je kunt niet een andere tijdlijn als voorkeur instellen. Dit gaat in tegen jouw belang. Wij, Bits of Freedom, spannen hierover een rechtszaak aan tegen Meta. Vind je dit ook belangrijk? Als ik Instagram of Facebook open, krijg ik als eerste de content die Meta wil dat ik zie. Die is gebaseerd op profilering, waarbij Meta mijn gedrag en interesses, én die van alle andere gebruikers nauwlettend volgt en analyseert. Ik heb de optie te schakelen naar een tijdlijn met de content van de mensen en pagina's die ik zelf volg, in chronologische volgorde. Maar Meta maakt het mij lastig deze tijdlijn te vinden en te gebruiken. En ik kan hem niet als voorkeur instellen. Hierdoor krijg ik elke keer dat ik de app opnieuw open, een tijdlijn te zien die gebaseerd is op profilering. Meta's belang lijkt belangrijker dan het mijne.
Daarmee overtreedt Meta de Digital Services Act (DSA). Deze wet is bedoeld om de machtsbalans tussen een platform zoals Meta en gebruikers zoals ik meer in evenwicht te brengen. Ik wil dat Meta haar platformen aanpast, zodat ik kan instellen dat ik liever een tijdlijn zie die niet gebaseerd is op profilering.
Ik vind dit extra belangrijk omdat er verkiezingen aankomen. Verkiezingen zijn fundamenteel voor onze democratische rechtstaat. Om mij als kiezer in staat te stellen een goed geïnformeerde keuze te maken, is het belangrijk dat ik zelf kan bepalen welke informatie ik te zien krijg. En niet dat Meta dat voor mij beslist. Meta’s aanbevelingsalgoritmen kunnen misbruikt worden voor heimelijke beïnvloeding van de kiezer. Omdat Meta’s platformen een belangrijk onderdeel zijn van mijn informatiedieet en dat van vele anderen, is het essentieel dat Meta mijn keuze (en die van anderen) respecteert.
Daarom steun ik Bits of Freedom in haar rechtszaak tegen Meta.

Met je verklaring van steun voor onze rechtszaak, ga je ermee akkoord dat we je naam en woonplaats (tijdelijk) vastleggen. We gebruiken de gegevens alleen om de rechter te laten zien dat veel mensen onze zaak steunen. De rechter zal waarschijnlijk alleen naar het totaal aantal steunverklaringen kijken, niet naar de individuele verklaringen. Meta's recommendation algorithms determine what content you see on your timeline. Unless you deliberately switch to a different timeline. But you cannot set this alternative timeline as your preferred option. This goes against your interests. We, Bits of Freedom, are taking Meta to court over this practice. When I open Instagram or Facebook, the first thing I see is the content Meta wants me to see. This content has been chosen based on profiling, whereby Meta closely monitors and analyzes my behavior and interests, as well as those of all other users. I can switch to a timeline with content from the people and pages I follow, in chronological order. But Meta makes it difficult for me to find and use this timeline. And I cannot set it as my preferred option. As a result, every time I open the app, I am shown the timeline that is based on profiling. Meta's interests seem more important than mine.
This is a violation of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA is intended to empower users such as myself opposite platforms like Meta. I want Meta to modify its platforms so that I can choose a timeline that is not based on profiling as my preferred option.
This is particularly important to me because of the upcoming national elections. Elections are fundamental to our democracy and rule of law. To enable me, as a voter, to make a well-informed choice, it is important that I have control over what information I receive. Rather than Meta deciding that for me. Meta's recommendation algorithms can be misused to covertly influence voters. Because its platforms are an important part of my information diet and that of many others, it is essential that Meta respects my choice (and that of others).
That is why I support Bits of Freedom in its lawsuit against Meta by signing the petition above.
